What self-containment means now

The old blue warrant transition ended on 6 June 2026. From 7 June 2026, self-contained-only freedom camping areas recognise vehicles with a current green warrant and certificate under the newer self-contained vehicle system.

  • Green warrant card, certificate and register details where the vehicle passes
  • Fixed toilet that can be used inside the vehicle
  • Fresh water storage sized for the declared occupancy
  • Grey water containment and compliant drainage
  • Sink, ventilation, rubbish storage and practical fit-out checks
  • Occupancy rating matched to the people using the vehicle

2026 green warrant changes

Fixed toilet required
Portable toilets do not meet the current standard. The toilet needs to be fixed in the vehicle and usable inside it.
Stay within the rating
The vehicle is certified for a stated number of people. That limit matters when camping in self-contained-only areas.
Display the green warrant
The green warrant card must be visible where required, and the certificate details should match the vehicle setup.

Inspection plus fixes package

Toilet and mounting upgrades
Fixed toilet options, cassette mounting, access, privacy and practical installation work quoted as needed for green warrant compliance.
Fresh and grey water systems
Tanks, plumbing, pumps, drains, vents, fittings and grey water routing to bring the vehicle closer to compliance.
Storage and finishing parts
Rubbish storage, signage, brackets, hoses and small fit-out details that often hold up certification.

What we inspect

Water Capacity
Fresh water tank volume measured and verified against the minimum requirement for your vehicle's stated occupancy.
Toilet & Waste Tank
Fixed toilet with a sealed cassette or black water tank. We confirm the system is functional and correctly plumbed.
Grey Water System
All grey water (sink, shower) must be captured on board. We check all drains route to a dedicated grey water tank.
Certification & Green Warrant
On passing, we issue the official self-containment certificate and green warrant card for your vehicle.

Certificate valid for up to 4 years. If you change the water, wastewater, toilet or fitted layout after certification, the vehicle may need to be re-inspected before the expiry date.
Check the local camping rules. Councils, DOC and LINZ can still set site-specific freedom camping restrictions. Camping in a non-certified vehicle, or with more people than the vehicle is certified for, can attract a $400 infringement fee. Failing to display the warrant card can attract a $200 fee.
